Good Deed Done.

A little birdy told me that a steam train would be coming through Totnes yesterday morning on its way to Cornwall.  As much as I like seeing the steam trains on the preserved lines nothing beats seeing one hammering through a station at 75MPH.

Off I went on the pushie, camera in hand.  I wasn't disappointed, it was spectacular.......if you like steam trains.

The rest of the day we just chilled in the sun.  I mentioned to Elaine and mum that the steam train would be coming back through Totnes at about 19.30 on its way back to London and they both agreed to come with me to watch it.  On the way there we found a back pack by a bus stop - on investigating the contents we found it contained a couple of smelly t shirts, some money, a school yearbook, a defrosted frozen pizza and a nice new Macbook air laptop!

We carried on to the station and awaited the steam train along with a few other enthusiasts plus a lot of people awaiting the express train from Penzance to Paddington.  The train was well overdue when they announced the steam train had broken down about 5 miles from Totnes and was blocking the line to London, a rescue train was on its way but it would be about 3 hours before the line reopened!
What a bummer, but I wonder who compensates the Great Western customers waiting to get to London!  I can imagine that the regular train companies would like to see the steam trains banned from mainline running!

I rang the cops when we got back to the van re the rucksack and they said that we should to go the Totnes police station in the morning and use the blue phone outside the station and hopefully someone would come and take it from us.

This morning we went to the cop shop.  What a palaver!  You ring the phone then they ring someone inside the station to ask them to let you in, the problem was that no one in the station wanted to answer the phone!  After about 30 mins of waiting and banging on the front door a copper (DC) walked past, who agreed to take it off our hands!  He took down our details (on the back of a receipt I had in my pocket and using El's pen!).  He rang later and gave us an incident no, if it isn't claimed in 28 days we can have it!!

We popped into the dog friendly Cafe Royale for a full English on the way back to the van.  It is a great little dog friendly cafe, they even gave the dogs a couple of snags.

In the afternoon we caught a bus to Paignton.
Mum and Elaine did a prom walk.

Ice creams on the beach.

The seafront part of Paignton is a bit minty and rather chav central.

Once you get away from the seafront and past the station it is quite a nice town.
This evening we had dinner out in The Dartmouth Inn, which was quite a nice little locals boozer, although it did have quite a few boozy locals in it!

Tomorrow we will take the ferry to Dartmouth, weather permitting.

We Find God and Cream Teas!

We picked up mother from Milton Keynes yesterday morning, our destination for the next few days was Totnes in Devon.

It was a pretty crappy drive with very heavy traffic.  We turned off the motorway at Bath because it was blocked and for the rest of the journey we went cross country.  It was good to be moving but it added a extra couple of hours to the journey.

This is our mooring which is right in the centre of Totnes.  There is no 240 hookup, so it will be interesting to see how well the solar panel works.

Today we went for a walk into town, the tide was well and truly out!

We love Totnes, it is a very alternative town which we both like.

There is an eclectic mix of shops in the town, no Primark here or any of the old tat you normally see in an English town.

Narnia...the time travellers shop!

Even I enjoy wondering around the shops here.

Fantastic vintage shop, with not so vintage prices!

Devon Harp Centre!

Tea rooms.

Check out the tea pots.

Inside the tea shop, no doggies allowed unfortunately, so we couldn't check it out.

Different.

They just go on......

and on...

The local church was having its summer fete, so we went inside for afternoon tea.  Mother freaked out at being in a church and ran away to check out more shops!

Scones jam and cream, and praying that I wouldn't put on too much weight!

Luverley.
(El likes the 'orbs' in the pew behind me in this pic - keep telling her its dust, but she won't have it!)

The Totnes brass band were playing in the corner.

Back down the hill we go heading back to base.

Still no water.

We went for a walk along the river tonight which it is virtually breaking its banks.  It must be a very high tide, full (super) moon and all that.

It is Sunday tomorrow, better find some nice clothes for church.....Amen!

Triple Transport Treat

We were up early this morning as we were going on our 'round robin' trip.

The ferry is virtually next to the campsite, so we didn't have far to go.  On the way there we passed these, they are veggies, herbs and edible plants, which are free to be picked whenever they are ripe.  There are a few beds all over the town ...

We got a front row seat on the ferry. Bombo thought he was back on the narrowboat and assumed the position ...

It takes an hour and a half to reach Dartmouth, it is a lovely trip meandering down the River Dart ...

This is a salmon 'village' even though only 10 people live here.  Evidently it should really be classed as a 'hamlet' but a clerk at the records office long ago wrote '100' instead of 10 people ...

Passing Dittisham ...

Agatha Christie lived here until her death ...

And Sir Walter Raleigh lived here ...

As we approached Dartmouth a steam train was making its way to Paignton ...

We had a stroll around Dartmouth and had lunch in a pub before catching a passenger ferry across the river to Kingswear, from where the steam train departs to Paignton ...

We went for a walk around Kingswear and the boatyard.
Nice boat ...

Then it was time to take our seats for the next part of the journey ...

Here comes our engine ...

It is about a 30 minute trip, with the last part skirting the coast ...

Nearly there ...

What can you say about Paignton....well its not our cup of tea!

Haven't had a prom pose for a while, so here's one ...

It wasn't that warm!

88 Comes to mind ...

Finally the last part of the trip, an open top bus back to Totnes ...

All in all we had a lovely, long day out!

O.M.G.

Although we have been moored up in Totnes for the last few days, we hadn't checked out Totnes itself.

So, today was the day for checking out Totnes.  Paul and Julie swung by in the morning to say their farewells as they were heading off back to Maidstone.

Once they had gone we went for a walk around Totnes.  As the title of the post says, OMG ... this is the place we have been looking for, it is fantastic!

So what do we like.....

Quirky small shops and cafes, pubs with live music, alternative type people, no chavs, a river running through the town, boats, mainline railway to London, beaches close by, an area of outstanding natural beauty and a steam railway to Dartmoor. What more could you want?

The only downside is the weather - we don't know what the winters are like but all the locals we have spoke to reckon its not too bad.

Unfortunately the camera battery went flat so not many pics today ...

I love the name of this place, check out the link here for the Australian definition of a Bogan!

Of course we are still going back to Australia but this is the place we could both very happily settle down in one day.

Tomorrow we are off on a 'round robin' trip....down the river on the ferry to Dartmouth, then on a steam train to Paignton, then the bus back to the site.
