On To The Fabulous Thames xx

Just watched Chelsea vs Bayern Munich.....Bugger!

So, a late blog...

We were up and at it early again to get off K and A canal - this swing bridge is right after the lock....

....and there is Elaine stopping traffic, aided by Sammie ...

We passed Bridget Jones' garden, they were rather enormous!

We did have a bit of a laugh at this boat trying to get into the lock after we left it ...

All over the place like a mad women's arms and still couldn't get it in the lock ...

Through the turf sided lock ...

Then we shot the rapids through Reading after we got the 'green traffic light' ...

Except it wasn't very rapid, the current was a trickle ...

Nice little terraces in the centre of Reading ...

And finally onto the Thames ... we were two very happy little bunnies!

It's not very often that the boat house is better than....

....the house !

Under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which was actually a temporary bridge for the Reading music festival and was now being dismantled ...

Into a lovely Thames lock with lock keepers and buttons....

....and nothing to do except hang onto the end of a rope!

Locals playing in the river....did I mention it was another glorious sunny day ...

Finally we moored up in the late arvo at Pangbourne meadows ...

There we are half way down  on the right ...

After another long day in the saddle we went for a drink in the dog friendly Greyhound pub at Whitchurch ...

Where a little girl was fascinated by Sammie - and he by her, so they had a good play together ...

We bought an exceptionally yummy takeaway from the local Indian and went back to the boat to watch the aforementioned football match, double bugger!

On To Ufton

We woke this morning with our feet feeling that they were higher than our heads (we have a cross bed).
Once  we got up we realised we were sat on a fair old tilt, we were only moored about 100 metres from the lock so I walked up and opened the paddles and went back to the boat for my Shreddies.

It didn't take long before we had enough water to float off.

So off we went on  today's marathon.  We moored behind this boat last night, it looks like he is re building it under the bridge!

He even has his own little garden ...

Through the Newbury swing bridge ...

Underneath the the Newbury budget version of the Rialto Bridge ...

We passed one boat on the narrows, it must be fun when the river is in flood!

We stopped at Tesco and did a bit of a shop.

We then teamed up with a  boat until they pulled up at Thatcham.
They were a very nice Aussie couple from Melbourne who have leased the boat for 6 months ... the cost, £8000.00  - still cheaper than a weekly renter, but still a bit exy, I reckon.  On their admission it is a bit of a ropey old boat.  We had a good old chat with them ... they go back down under on 10th September, but if it wasn't for their children over there they would much rather stay in the UK!

He did have the K and A curse though....tying up the boat in a lock when sharing...why?!

Bit of a squeeze getting past these guys ...

But squeeze past we did.

Approaching Aldermaston lift bridge just after 17.30 ...

This was without a doubt the most traffic that we had held up at a bridge ...

Elaine working the controls ...

We finally pulled up after a long day near Ufton swing bridge.

Nice mooring with a good satellite signal ...

So Elaine has had an early night, leaving me to do the blog and watch the ........

FOOTBALL....Woohoo.

Nearly forgot, earlier in the year (May) we met our  two favourite TV personalities in Lymm.

Tonight the episode they were filming of Location Location Location was on the box, in the background of some of the location shots was the mighty Caxton.

Flash back shot to May ...

Kirstie was grimacing because I had my hand on her arse !   (OK, not really!)

It's A Conspiracy I Tell Ya!

As we were on a mission to get the boat back northward we decided that we must get up early and leave early - like 95% of the continuous cruisers.  Our normal theory is to leave late then all the problems are sorted by the early birds!

So, we were up at 7.00am and off by 7.30am - there was a bit of mist plus it was a bit chilly.

Were we enjoying our early start? No it was crap and I wished I was still in bed!

First lock of the day - as there was no landing stage the workers worked the lock for us - bargain!

Second lock gave us no probs, plus we were now awake and ready to kick ass!

Third lock ... uh oh - the pic shows the gap of the closed lock!

We tried to sort it but just couldn't get it to shut/  C&RT were rang so we had a cup of tea and waited and waited.  Nothing was happening so the boat coming up stuck his bow into the lock and started probing with his boat hook and pole to try and find and shift the obstruction.  He found it and said it felt like a body!  He managed to move it, we actually think it may have been a sandbag.

As you can see a fair bit of traffic had built up.  We were at the top and if you look carefully you can see a hire boat behind us sideways across the canal ... we shared the next few locks with these guys.

This mean looking bugger was on the cill, perhaps he was the blockage!

There is the hireboat in front of us in their normal position, sideways across the canal!

Now I have nothing against hire boats - nearly all the wankers we have met have been in the private boats, but this bunch were just so lazy.  There were eight of them ... at every lock they got off the boat, didn't do a great deal, then all got on again even if the lock was 100 metres away, they were driving us mental.  They were letting Elaine run around doing most of the work on the locks while they stood around!  At one point there was quite a gap between a couple of locks, so we arrived first, set the lock and were in there waiting for them - we had waited long enough and we couldn't see them so off we went on our own!.

Yay on our own, much better!  By now the sun was out and it was yet another glorious summer's day, Sammie enjoyed laying in the sunshine.

A couple of cows gave Elaine a push with the gates.

Through Hungerford passing the trip boat.

We stopped at the services at Hungerford to fill with water empty nasties etc. The trip boat passed us as we were on the service point but we caught him at the first lock and gave them a hand.  The skipper said at the next lock they would go through, leave the gates open chuck a u-ey and re enter the lock, by which time we would be there. Sounded fair enough!  We were there alright ...and then waited for about 45 mins whilst all the punters had a play with the windlasses and had their photos taken on the lock beams!  Never mind. they are tourists and we would not want to begrudge them having fun, after all the canal really isn't the sort of place to rush around on.

It was actually a very pleasant cruise, Bombo soon adjusted to boat life after his week away.

Passing this very desirable des res.

Hello ladies!!

And here were his girls!

This chap travelling in his canoe was setting up camp at the lock.

We nearly made it to Newbury but as it was 20.00 and getting dark we pulled up at this most desirable location by a flyover of a very main road!

Early night and another early start tomorrow, but hopefully not as long, all good fun though.
